關鍵期是由Lorenz 於1952觀察小天鵝 的發現 --為了生存 在此階段小鵝會烙印母親形象 以利生存 這是演化論之觀點 （他們都是如達爾文演化論者家）
而 Borstein (1989)則指出敏感期用於描繪人類發展較佳 -因為 敏感期之界線不像關鍵期那麼嚴格 若真錯過 之後仍可以發展 但是比較困難 最明顯的例子就是--依附 人類的依附之形成時間是較漫長的 而不像小天鵝 就在那幾天 烙印之後不能改變了
所以，用於人類發展，比較現代的名詞是敏感期，而非關鍵期。

Sensitive period: a time that is optimal for certain capacities to emerge and in which the individual is especially responsive to environmental influence.
Critical period -it refers to a limited time span during which the child is biologically prepared to acquire certain adaptive behaviors but needs the support of an appropriately stimulating.
